The letters in SEO stand for Search Engine Optimization.
That’s the type of explanation that’s great IF you ALREADY KNOW what it means.
Another words, at best, it’s barely helpful. Let's try a better explanation.
It’s best if you break down the “parts” of SEO. For a moment, let’s separate the “SE” from the “O”.
SE = Search Engine; O = Optimization
First, what does it mean to “optimize” anything? We try to find the OPTIMUM way to have it work.
What is a search engine? Essentially, it is a sort of directory, a categorization process. A search engine is much more powerful than a standard directory, because so many people can make changes to it at one time. It truly is DYNAMIC. It’s not just some simple list.
However, SEO targets trying to being the most easily noticed for as many relevant “lists” (search engine results) as possible.
So SEO is simply our effort to best improve (OPTIMIZE) our chances of being seen by people using SEARCH ENGINES.
By the way, if you want an actual “definition,” here is the SEO definition from Wikipedia:
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. In general, the earlier (or higher on the page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a website web presence.
