Offsite SEO: Forum Commenting

Here is another offsite search engine optimization (SEO) to do.

Forum Commenting

It is similar to Blog Commenting, another effective and easy to implement.

There are fewer forums, but sometimes, you can get a forum on a well-established website.  What this means to you is that you MIGHT be able to make a backlink to your site from a somewhat high-ranking keyword related website.

There is one difference between Blogs and Forums.

Like blogs, you can leave comments on forums.  Sometimes you can leave a backlink to your site; others you cannot.  If you leave good enough answers often enough, the right people might see them and begin referring your site IF it is a good source of information for them and the other visitors from that forum.

On most forums, you can create your own thread. A thread is a new topic that you create for other forum members to post comments.  Like good quality comments, creating your own thread can really make a good impression.  It can also shape discussion toward the topic of your (and your website's) choice.

Warning:  Use Discretion

Just like I warned with blog commenting, be careful not to Spam forums that are unrelated to your website's topics.  Not only will you irritate people (and they will stop coming to your site), Google tends to ignore backlinks coming from sites that do not relate.

At the worst, Google will reduce your website's trustrank as a legitimate information source, meaning that your site will not show as high on their result lists.  Sometimes, it seems like your site is indexed within their search engine, but you cannot find it without already knowing the website exists.

How can I find forums that are related to my topics?

You can type...

"keyword" forum

For example, if your targeted keyword is hot chicken soup, then you would type...

"hot chicken soup" forum

in the Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. search bar.

Sometimes, you can also type..."keyword" group.

How often should I do this?

Like any other form of marketing, the more you do it, the better your results are likely to be.

My suggestion for a beginner is that between the blog posts and forum posts is to leave 1 or 2 comments on either or both each day.  You will build your exposure gradually (which is good for Google), and it will be a lot more than most, if not all, of your competitors.

Plus, you might get ideas for site when you look at other people's forum posts and threads.
